Canon Theologian Interviews Father James Martin, SJ in Anticipation of Papal Conclave

May 7th, 2025

As the Roman Catholic Church turns its attention to the selection of a new Supreme Pontiff following the death of Pope Francis on April 21st, Canon Theologian Rob Lee sat down with his friend Fr. James Martin, SJ and recorded an interview. Fr. Martin is currently at the Vatican covering the election of the next Pope which begins today (May 7th, 2025) for America Magazine where he is Editor-at-Large. Fr. Martin is also a well-known bestselling author and founder of Outreach, a resource for LGBTQ+ Roman Catholics and their families.

A prayer for the Roman Catholic Church from our Canon Theologian:

God you are the Great Shepherd of the sheep, we implore you that in this process you may show forth your love for the world your desire to have a big-tent church both within Roman Catholicism and beyond. May we draw the circle ever wider until that day when all have a space at the table—no exceptions. In your wisdom call forth a pope during this conclave who witnesses to your great love for all of humankind, not just the select few. Give the person you have called strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. In that same thread, weave together a way in which those who have been hurt by the Roman Catholic Church might be healed and transformed and renewed for the calling you have on their lives. This we ask in the name of Jesus, the great head of the Church. Amen.
